Hilltop View Bar & Grill

Image
Drove out east again and stopped at the Hilltop - I guess Roatan has a fly season and July was it.  The Hilltop is open air seating and the flies were terrible.  We sat down and the guy that brought us the menus was the same one that was our waiter and cook. The menu was very limited.  There was one other couple there at the restaurant.  It took 40 minutes to get our food.  I ordered a hamburger and french fries.  The burger was good.  Greg ordered the fried fish plate.  It was a whole fish - that always grosses me out.  I'm definitely not a vegetarian, but I don't like it when my food has a head on it.  That came with fried plantains and salad with a spicy dressing.  Wasn't happy when I got the bill and saw that our cokes were $3.60 when most places charge us $1.  Don't think we'll be going back.

Happy Harry's Hideaway - West End

I had heard a lot of good reviews about this place so we thought we better try it.  They definitely live up to the "Happy" part of the name.  I've never ever been to a restaurant this friendly.  Every single employee we walked past greeted us, made conversation or just encouraged us to enjoy the place.  It was refreshing. The service was excellent.    I ordered the fish fingers plate after making sure it was local fish - Snapper.  Greg ordered the shrimp tacos that came with Pico de gallo and two other sauces.  I had them change one of the shrimp tacos to chicken so I could try it.  It was good.  My fish and french fries were good, the tartar sauce was delicious and I had to ask for more because I ate too much of it. lol If you see advertisements of people jumping on those big inflatable things, they have one right in front of us.  Plus they have swings over the water and hammocks.   Next time we'll have to come back with our swim suits.  The whole restaurant is over

Jonesville

Image
I made a mistake.  On m June 18, 2021 post I put Jonesville, when it was actually Jonesville Point.  Jonesville is just across the little Bight (inlet) from Jonesville Point.  It's a little bigger town, but not much.  It does have a lot of large fishing boats and is the starting point for taking a small boat trip through the mangrove trees.

Rain

Image
You know in the old cartoons when it was going to rain, you saw the cloud and it rained in that one same spot.  Well living in Hawaii - we saw that a lot.  Here it's almost the same, except you see the clouds move in quickly and dump just as fast.  The picture below is from our balcony, we saw the rain coming in from the east and moving towards us and about 5 minutes later we had rain so hard we couldn't even see the ocean.  I call them cartoon clouds.  (not very scientific, but accurate. )

Hawaiian Bread in Roatan!

Sorry, I haven't posted much this week,  Greg got the stomach flu so we stayed close to home, then we had a family issue, then I got the stomach flu, so not going any where. I did find some Hawaiian Buns at the grocery store last week and thought it was funny to get all the way over here.  The buns are $5.60 each.  We didn't buy them.  I'm sure they are not as fresh as buying it in Hawaii.

Bean Crazy - Coxen Hole

We had read some good reviews for this place so we decided to try it.  First off, it's at the back of a large "Home Depot" type place called Serrano Industrial, so it's a little hard to find unless you know what you are looking for.  It's a coffee place, so their lunch menu was very limited, a total of 4 sandwiches and a burger.  We both tried the burger, it was really good, the french fries were stringy, not my favorite.  Then I looked over at an employee that works in the store and he's eating this fancy looking plate of meatballs, rice and veggies and it looks really good, so I go up to the counter to pay and ask the gal what that was.  She say, oh didn't my waitress offer you the daily special?  I said no, she was disappointed.  It turns out that she makes a different daily special every day and it's $6 including a drink.  We will definitely be going back. Here is the daily lunch special.  We went back yesterday.  It was chicken, rice & beans,

Canibal Cafe - West End

We were a little afraid to stop here since their motto is "  Where we're happy to have you for dinner."  lol I was tempted by the big menu out front.  It had Chicken Fajitas for under $10 - I have never seen Fajitas for that price.  We started off ordering the Chips and guacamole, but the kitchen (which was 5 ft from our table) wasn't sure they had any available.  They brought out the chips and salsa and then found some avocados and made us some guacamole.  Then we ordered a Chicken Fajita plate.  The only complaint I have is I wish there were more green peppers in the fajita mix, they were great!  Homemade tortillas with another plate of shredded lettuce, two types of shredded cheeses, sour cream, and pico de gallo.  Plus your hot pan of chicken/onions/green pepper mix.   They serve it like in America where the chicken comes in a hot cast iron pan.  They cover the handle for you so you don't have to worry about bumping it and burning yourself.  Great place for M

Cruise ships are startng to arrive!!!

Image
So today was the first cruise ship to arrive in Roatan since Covid.  I thought it would be fun to drive down to Dixon Cove where the big cruise dock is and see all the shops open and the tourists spending money.  Dixon Cove is 7 miles from our place and driving over there, all of a sudden I see the cruise ship - pretty much in the middle of no where.  Turns out there is a cruise ship dock in a bay called Mahogany Bay.  There are no shops and nothing else around, so all the cruise ship passengers have to either take a tour or taxi to go see the island.  This is a Carnival ship that I guess does a 7 day cruise and stops here every week.  Royal Caribbean has a ship coming in 2 days.  Hopefully this one stops in Dixon Cove.   There are so many people here that rely only on tourism and yes it has been increasing the last few months but nothing compared to 2019 - before Covid.  So bring on the cruise ships!!!
