Eldon's Grocery Store in Roatan
Before I moved here, I kept trying to find out information on grocery stores and the price of gas ($2.50 a gallon). What I found out is: There are 2 Eldon's grocery store and another grocery store I haven't been to and can't remember the name.
Eldon's is a typical old fashioned grocery store. They carry almost everything you need. They have their generic brand called Essence - which is reasonably priced. They carry small household appliances - but they are more expensive than Walmart. We had to buy a coffee pot today for our little rental room and the least expensive one was $24. They have your regular drugstore products - soaps, shampoos, bandaids that type of stuff, plus hair dye and straighteners.
I'll describe the pictures:
Donuts and pastries - the donuts are a little over $1 each.Meats and cheese at good prices, the ham we had was $4.40 a lb. They have a wide variety of meats and cheeses that they will cut in chunks or slice for you right there.
The cakes looked delicious, but they were between $20 and $25 each.Unfortunately that one little rack is the only sunscreen and aloe they have in the whole store. We bought some sunscreen for our snorkel adventure and it was over $10.
Lots of variety
Living in Hawaii I was amazed at the selection of rice and rice cookers at the store. Here in Roatan, it's LARD!
Yes, this is lard in an assortment of sizes and packaging. It took up 1/2 an aisle.
In the back corner by the produce is your "Natural" food selection, for any of you gluten free people, they have all the different types of flours you need. Starting at $3 and up.
Very cool! I wonder what dishes are native that lard is used so much!!! I'm sure that all will be revealed in the course of time ;-) And the aisles aren't crowded either ~ how wonderful!
ReplyDeleteLisa, lard was widely used before vegetable oil was invented. In fact, it has been used as a sandwich ingredient for centuries in Easter European countries. Spread it on bread, sprinkle it with black peppers and paprika, and top it with onions. Bon Appetite!
DeleteI grew up on lard, we didn't know vegetable oil or margarine. Lard is good. They say it's not healthy, but I am 70 years old, so I kind of question that. Lard is good!
