Costa Dulce - GELATO!!! West Bay

Image
What is better after snorkeling (plus swallowing some sea water)?  Gelato of course! Just behind Bananarama is a little shopping plaza with a Gelato cart included!  They only have a few flavors, but they are really good.  Each scoop is only $1.6 or 3 scoops for $4.  They are small cups, but very flavorful.  I tried the coconut and Greg had the coffee.  They have a flavor called Mora - it's similar to Blackberry.  Next time I will try the Mora with the Mango - I think that would be a great combo.

Sandy Buns - West End

Image
We've walked past this place a couple of times and it always looked interesting.  Today we made a special stop just to try the food.  Since Covid they don't have paper menus so you go off the board outside, since we were expecting menus, the waiter/owner(?) brought the menu board inside for us to look at.  lol  We split their BLT 2.0 so that we would have room for dessert.   The owner cooked the bacon on a grill right there in the dining room and the smell blew out to the sidewalk, I thought for sure the guy's dog walking by would jump over the fence just by the smell.  The bread was focaccia and was soft and delicious.  They are famous for their cinnamon rolls and they lived up to the expectation.  It was delicious!  We will go back for just that reason.  2 Pepsi's, a sandwich and fries and a cinnamon roll came to a grand total of $1350 - not too bad of a price.

Silversides Restaurant

Image
I was told that this was a great restaurant to for a date.  Since it was my birthday I figured that was a good enough reason.  At the end of the driveway is a parking lot, then you take a little boat (think Disneyland) across a 20 ft wide canal to the Barefoot Cay (island).  Here you have a main building with a large deck with seating, and a pool in the middle.  Around the main area are little cabanas you can rent.  Reservations were suggested, but they open up at noon and we were the only guests for the first 20 minutes.   We ordered a Caesar salad and the fish and chips.  The service was slow, but that's probably the ambiance of the place.  The salad was huge and had a lot of bacon on top, the fish was just ok.  It was a beer batter and greasy.  The french fries were the best part of the meal.  They had seasoning and parmesan cheese sprinkled on top.  Best french fries on the island, but is it worth it to go here just for the french fries??? Since it was my birthday they brought

Bananarama in West Bay

Image
Sunday we went to Bananarama - I had heard that if you go there for $12 a person they will watch your belongings while you snorkel and then you can use the $12 in food credit.  So we went there and ordered lunch.  Fish Basket $10 and salad for $5.  The salad comes with one option for dressing - Ranch, the salad was huge!!!  The fish had a very light and flakey batter and there were 6 pieces with french fries.  Great food.   So after talking to the waitress it turns out that they have lockers they rent for $5 USD.  So now we know where to leave our stuff when we snorkel.  The snorkeling is great and I'll try to get my underwater camera to work next time we go!

Jonesville Point

Image
Took a detour today and went down a gravel road on the east side of the island.  It said something about a Czech village.  It was a housing area, farther down the road was a cute little neighborhood called Jonesville Point.  There were some houses and this little church on the ocean with a cemetery next door.  The newest date in the cemetery was 1969.  I'm pretty sure some were probably close to 100 years, but it's hard to tell because they would get more wear and tear that close to the ocean.

Circle K and BIP

Image
The main gas stations here on the island are Tesoro and BIP which most of the time have a Circle K in them.  They all look fairly new.  They have specials of a hotdog, nachos and drink for $4.20.  We thought we would try it.  Turns out they are out of nachos???  So we looked at the rest of their menu.  They had a Munchie plate we tried for $7.20  It had 6 bbq chicken wings, 2 mozzarella sticks, 2 chicken strips and french fries with a ranch dip and marinara sauce.  It was typical Gas station fair, nothing special.  The place was busy.

Dixon Cove

Image
Dixon Cove reminds me of Tijuana.  It's the cruise ship port and hopefully the ships will be arriving in July.  It's full of narrow streets with lots of little shops, right now a lot are still closed waiting for the tourists to show up, I'm sure it will be busier next month.  We stopped and walked around, there is a little tiny park near the Eldon's Grocery store on the waterfront.  The streets are narrow and some of them are ONE WAY, but they don't have any signs posting that information. Of course, people are friendly and flag you down if you are going the wrong way, not that it happened to me! lol

What is a Lady Lee?

Image
When I told my Realtor I was looking for a few things - she told me to go to Lady Lee which is at the Mega Plaza in French Harbor.  It's a mini department store.  We ended up buying a love seat and a fridge there the first week we moved here.  They have pretty good prices on most things.  They carry TV's, kitchen appliances, furniture, beds, sheets, very generic looking comforter sets (no one needs that here.)  Plus kitchen appliances (bought a popcorn popper and a coffee pot for our spare room we rent out.)  Plus they have kids toys, games and suitcases.   The name sounds weird to me, but then I started thinking about our department stores and we have a JC Penny.   Not too much different. I have some pictures of prices.  The fridge is a small one - $379, a queen size mattress is $295, our couch was around $700, you can get a sofa sleeper for $1304.  Not bad prices.  There are some other higher end furniture stores here on the island if you choose.

Buying gas in Roatan

Image
I tried to find out about gas prices before I arrived but everyone ignored that questions, just so you know June 2021 and gas prices are $4.20 a gallon.  Here they are in liters not gallons. Our first trip to Roatan I thought that it was a lot like Hawaii would be in the 1950's.  Well I was right! THEY STILL PUMP YOUR GAS AND WASH YOUR WINDSHIELD - for no extra charge.  Every gas station we have stopped at does that for us.  Amazing! I don't have pictures of any gas stations, so I thought I would show you the restaurant we ate at tonight.  Pork cutlets, fresh veggies and green beans.  Made it myself. lol

Fruit stands

Image
Driving around the island there are fruit stands here and there all over the place.  A few of the stands are empty now since covid ruined the tourism business, but there are still ones that are available.  This one is close to where we shop, I've stopped a couple of times, compared to Hawaii they have really good prices.  You can get a pineapple for less than $2, this last time I bought a Watermelon for $3.60.  Tomatoes were $1 a lb.  They have a large selection, this time they even had bags of peanuts.  I have found out that they grow a lot of cashews on the island, not enough to make it a business.  I haven't tried them yet because people sell them for $16 for a bag.

The Wok Sandy Bay

Image
Ok, I'm really sorry everyone.  I was told this was a Thai restaurant - turned out it was Sushi and Chinese food. lol  We are so glad we stopped.  They have the best fried rice I've had in years, maybe ever.  We ordered pork dumplings as appetizer and split an orange chicken plate.  The dumplings were tasty and had lots of pork, the orange chicken came with broccoli with sesame seeds sprinkled, the fried rice was light and fluffy with egg, onion and soy sauce mixed in.  They don't have a very big menu, sushi, stirfry options where you add proteins to rice, or noodles, we'll have to try that next.  We will definitely be back.
