See Roatan

 I had seen the Snappers Restaurant many times at the Mega Plaza, but it was vacant, then I saw this other restaurant called Caribe - turns out it's the new Snappers.  The new Snappers is a much better location - its right on the water.   They had a menu on large chalkboards mounted to the wall behind the cash registers, they also had a long cafeteria style area, we were curious.  Turns out that it's an either/or situation.  You can choose food from the long counters, or you can go to the cash register and order off the menu on the chalkboard, little confusing at first.   The cafeteria line was an a la carte,  it included sides like potato salad, rice/beans, white rice, cooked whole bananas, main dishes were conch dish and bbq chicken thighs.  Looked interesting but I like to try the fish plates, we ordered a fish filet plate with a side of rice/bean mix and a hamburger.  The Fish plate was good, came with a sauce on the side that w...

YEAH!!! My boxes finally arrived today.  What a challenge!  People are asking for my mailing address.  I'm not giving it out, not because I don't want to receive mail, it's a hassle here.  I shipped 8 boxes from Kona Hawaii to Roatan, the average weight was about 40 lbs per box.   My Realtor suggested I use Global Consolidation.  Other people here recommend DIP, either way, the boxes are in the same process.  You can use any method to ship them to a consolidator in Miami Florida.  I used UPS because the line at the Post Office on the 15th of April was too long.  So I'm sure I paid more than I should have, but the 8 boxes total was $977.  I recommend the heavy duty tubs because I used cardboard boxes and they didn't hold up to the weight very well.  UPS charges extra for tubs, but now that I have opened everything tubs would have been sturdier.  So I ship it to Miami, then Global Consolidators puts it on a boat to Roatan, i...

 This was a challenge, a week ago we went to the only bank that allows foreigners to open a bank account which is Davivienda.  We waited for over an hour to talk to the only customer service rep there, to find out that you need a local phone number. Today we went back when it wasn't busy.  We only had to wait 15 minutes.   You open two accounts - one in US dollars and one in Honduran dollars called Limpuras. Here is what you need to open a bank account: *Cash in both USD and HNL *An Active local phone number - one phone number per person.  Since we only had gotten one phone number we opened the account under Greg and not both of us. *Two people here in Roatan that can vouch for you and their phone numbers. *Your current - or last employer if you are retired, their address and phone number *Most importantly your passport. They won't help you if you don't have all that information, so now we have an account.

 I heard about this from a post on Facebook.  Today is Mother's Day and I didn't realize that it's a big holiday here in Roatan and most stores and restaurants were closed.  We found Beachers by accident even though it was on my list to go to.  The view from the seating area is terrific and relaxing.  We ordered the onion rings appetizer - it was great and came with a ranch/red pepper dip - turns out it was what they call their tartar sauce.  The sauce was very good, so good we used it as a salad dressing on our main dish which was sea bass filet with mashed potatoes and salad.  It was all delicious.  We will come back...eventually.

 Should have known by the name of the place not to stop there - Mayday. lol  We wanted to stop at "The Breakfast House" but they were  closed, so we went to Mayday, they are both located in the large shopping center in French Harbor.  The place was busy, which we take as a good sign, placed our order at the counter and then Greg went to find a table outside and I stood around waiting, and waiting and waiting, then I went to sit down for awhile and another gal at our table that spoke English told me to tell the people at the counter that we are outside and they would deliver our food.  We waited and waited some more, finally a table opened up inside, so we went in there and waited, and waited some more.  Finally after 50 - yes FIFTY minutes, we finally got our food.  Greg ordered the Taco plate and tried the nacho plate.  Greg was braved and tried Chorizo sausage tacos, I went with Chicken nachos.  They grill the meat there in the kitchen whic...

 We stumbled upon this great Tex Mex restaurant on the main road with an awesome view.  We drove past on Cinco de Mayo and saw all the cars in the parking lot and decided to check up on it.  We were not disappointed.  Went for lunch today and the food was great and the view even better.  We ordered the Beef Taco plate and the Chicken Fajita Plate.  The beef tacos were ground beef and loaded with meat, lettuce and tomatoes, for $10 the plate came with 2 tacos, a side of their beans and rice.  The Fajita plate came with enough fajita mix to fill 4 tortillas  (they bring you two and you can ask for more free of charge), guacamole and pico degallo.  You also get a side of rice and beans with the Fajitas. $10.95)  There was more food than we can eat and ended up taking some home for tomorrow's lunch.  The restaurant is situated on the top of a hill with a fantastic view of the ocean and it was clear enough we could see Mainland Honduras....

 If we had known how close this restaurant is, we could have walked when we didn't have a vehicle.  We went there for lunch, it has been in business since 1978.  It was also featured on one of the travel shows.  Not impressed.  We arrived a little before 12pm and were the only customers the whole time.  Seated promptly with menus, we chose to sit outside overlooking French Harbor, It was very scenic and relaxing.  Decided to go with a combo platter of steak and shrimp.  We were served with some bread drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, they split the main dish for us and I forgot to take a picture.  Combined it was an 8 oz steak, 8 pieces of shrimp, grilled veggies and a baked potato.  They gave us tarter sauce for the shrimp, but nothing for the baked potato.  Being the only guests there, I figured the waiter would stop by shortly to see if we needed anything (pepper and butter for the potatoes).  I was pretty much d...
